Full subject description

At university, most written assignments require you to draw on a range of different sources to support your arguments and ideas. Learning how to incorporate and reference these sources effectively and accurately not only helps you uphold the standards of academic integrity required at the University of Melbourne, but also improves the quality of your work.

Referencing is used to indicate which parts of your writing are your ideas and which parts have been informed by the work of others. How you reference varies according to the referencing style you use, as each style follows a specific set of conventions.

In this module you will learn how to:

  • Recognise which sources need to be referenced and which do not
  • Incorporate sources to show understanding and meet academic integrity requirements
  • Take a step-by-step approach to referencing that involves planning, recording as you read and proofreading.
